Steve Davis teaches at The Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute (University of Hartford) where he works with talented students in a range of areas including trombone, small ensembles, trombone ensemble and senior projects. The faculty is world-class, featuring such well-known artists as Nat Reeves (bass/ensembles), Rene McLean (woodwinds/history/ensembles), Eric McPherson (drums), Shawn Montiero (voice/ensembles), Chris Casey (arranging/big band/ensembles), Andy LaVerne (piano), Rick Rozie (bass/ensembles), Peter Woodard (chair/theory/piano), Rich Goldstein (guitar) and visting faculty Eddie Henderson (trumpet) and Randy Johnston (guitar). Davis is also available for guest clinics and masterclasses.

In September of 2002 Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz Advanced Ensemble I received the first place award in the College Jazz Instrumental Group category in the Down Beat Magazine Annual Student Music Awards. Prof Davis was proud to have coached this talented group (incl. Ray McMorrin, James Burton, Dan Voss, Dezron Douglas, Damien Curtis, Craig Hartley and Marcus Jackson) and continues to enjoy working with talented and dedicated students each year.

Davis has been affiliated with Jackie McLean’s Jazz Education Programs at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School and the Artist’s Collective since 1985. Steve graduated from Hartt in 1989 and has been on faculty there for 20 years (eighth year full-time). He was also on faculty at the Artists’ Collective from 1987-96 and continues to do guest workshops there.

Toward the end of his legendary teaching career, the late Dr. Jackie Mc Lean received two more prestigious honors: He was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2003; and was named to the Hall of Fame in the 11th Annual Down Beat Achievement Awards for Jazz Education. Considering Dr. McLean’s more than 30 year history as one of the trail blazers in bringing America’s indigenous art form into the collegiate academic setting, this lifetime recognition was certainly overdue and well deserved.

These acknowledgments speak to the strong legacy and vision that Jackie McLean and his dedicated faculty and students have shared for over 35 years. The entire student body and faculty at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute are very proud of these achievements. We’re always looking forward to hearing from new students! please check out…
